The Friends of St Cross have donated two sets of equipment required to perform Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Releases (eCTR) to the operating theatres at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.

The eCTR procedure ensures a quicker return to function as patients are more comfortable and have smaller scars as the procedure is a keyhole surgery technique.

Consultant Hand Surgeon, Helen Hedley, explained: “Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common reasons patients are referred to the hand clinic. It causes pain, weakness, numbness and loss of function in the hand and frequently wakes patients at night, interrupting their sleep. It affects all ages but most often the 45-75 age group.

“It also allows patients to have both hands operated upon in one sitting, compared to standard treatment which would require two, and results in a quicker return to being able to wash hands, with just one period of recovery.”

Willy Goldschmidt, Communication Lead for the Friends of St Cross, said: “It is great to support this enhancement to services available at the Hospital of St Cross which will improve the patient experience and recovery time - especially if they need the procedure performed on both hands.”
