Surgeons operating at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby are delighted to have taken delivery of a Mini C-Arm X-ray device for use in surgery on patients’ hands or feet.

Andy Fowler, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, said: “This compact portable device can be operated and positioned by one of 10 trained surgeons without the assistance of a radiographer, making the set up and operating procedure quicker. This reduces the time patients spend in theatre, while also minimising infection risks by requiring fewer people in the operating theatre.

“The Mini C-Arm emits less radiation than the significantly larger devices, used during surgery on longer bones, which is another clear benefit for both staff and the patients. This equipment is a key enabler of the Trust’s strategy of increasing elective surgery at the Hospital of St Cross and, in particular, the expansion of the Hand Service. We are most grateful for all the support we have received from the Friends of St Cross for this donation and all the other specialist equipment they have donated.”

Willy Goldschmidt, Communications Lead for the Friends of St Cross, said: “Over the years we have been pleased to support requests for the latest developments in surgical equipment which enhance the patient experience and help to keep the Hospital of St Cross at the forefront of elective surgery in the Midlands.

“This latest donation, costing £50,000, takes the total we have spent on equipment for Cedar Ward and the theatres at the Hospital of St Cross to over £425,000 since the Friends foundation in 1955. We have only achieved this thanks to the generosity of our supporters in the community who we hope will support our Sapphire Anniversary Appeal which aims to raise at least £65,000 so that we can continue to make a difference.”
