The Friends of St Cross Sapphire Anniversary Appeal aimed to raise at least £65,000. Thanks to donations by Rugby Golf Club Ladies Section, and many others, the total raised when we closed the Appeal was a fantastic £81,000.

The Friends were indeed fortunate when Sue Tura nominated The Friends of St Cross, when the Appeal was launched just before the pandemic struck, as her chosen charity for her time as the Ladies Captain of Rugby Golf Club.

In spite of the obvious difficulties, due to the pandemic, the fund-raising efforts of the Ladies section can only be described as sensational and at a presentation in the Club House it was Sue Tura’s honour to present the Friends Chair, Doug Jones, with a cheque for the amazing sum of £3,740.

Doug Jones, Chair of the Friends of St Cross, said “it is only because of the generosity and unwavering support of Clubs, groups and individuals such as Rugby Golf Club’s ladies that we, the Friends, are able to support the Hospital of St Cross and the Community Service in Rugby in the way that we do. To have raised such an incredible amount during such a difficult time is truly remarkable and on behalf of the Friends of the Hospital of St Cross I cannot thank Sue and the Ladies of Rugby Golf Club enough.”

Sue Tura said “My time as Captain was certainly challenging, under the circumstances, but enjoyable at the same time. I wanted the money raised to go to a local charity and as I used to work at the Hospital of St Cross, I had first hand experience as to how well the Friends of St Cross support the hospital services.

A combination of raffles, visitors and members Opens, an auction that was supported by local businesses and the immense generosity of the members of Rugby Golf Club, culminated in the amazing amount raised. I am pleased that this will go towards supporting the local hospital.”
